Engineered wood

Usually, manufactured wood flooring has a plywood base that tolerates moisture and a surface layer of hardwood. This top layer can even be refinished like solid hardwood flooring. These floating floor planks need no attachment to the subfloor.

Board size

More and more homeowners are choosing hardwood boards in non-traditional sizes. Long and narrow boards offer a look that mixes well with contemporary decor, while wide planks bring back memories from years gone by.

Colors

Oak is the most popular hardwood species, and darks and lights are 'in.' Whitewashed, honey, and blonde, along with charcoal and black, are some of the favored colors. Greige, or gray with beige undertones, is a newer hue.

Textures

Smooth hardwood flooring is just one option. Textured brands are also available. Wirebrushed flooring is lightly textured, while handscraped hardwood has a deeper texturing and more rustic appearance. In contrast, a distressed look is usually created with a machine.
